23rd July
This is what was happening at Victoria Pier on the 23rd July in years gone by...
| 1923 | The 2nd Pavilion was formally opened by
Councillor Joseph Dicken, Chairman of the Pier and Entertainments
Committee. Following the ceremony, a reception and banquet was held at
the Metropole Hotel. The day was rounded off with a Grand Gala Night in
the new Pier Pavilion, which was designed to seat 1,350 people.
Following the disastrous fire of 27th March 1922, the Urban Council purchased the pier in September 1922. The Council's engineer, Mr J. W. Dunning organised the works to the pier and supervised the construction of the new pavilion by Messrs. Braithwaite & Co. The total cost of the works and purchase of the pier was £45,000 |
